The Victoria Multicultural Society operates the Victoria Event Centre (VEC), located in downtown Victoria, Lkwungen Territory. Opening its doors in 2003, the VEC has quickly become a favourite venue for emerging artists and local community organizers. We aim to provide an affordable, flexible and accommodating multi-purpose venue to produce cultural events, fundraisers and community celebrations. This organization is also affiliated with other local co-ops and nonprofits such as Island Solidarity Community Cooperative, Community
Action Bus, Retail Action Network and Social Coast.

The COVID-19 situation has impacted the activities of our organization since we cannot present live music events/gatherings above 50 people for the foreseeable future. However, during this period we are exploring digital strategies for staying safely connected and expanding our community through social media and live streaming. We will also be experimenting with small gatherings by following our covid safety plan and taking those extra steps to ensure our workers and community are feeling safe and comfortable during these times.
We are seeking a vibrant server to create a pleasant experience for guests by welcoming them into our space, taking their drinks orders, serving and taking payments. Additionally, they will be responsible for maintaining venue organization, cleanliness and overall atmosphere before, during and after events. Servers are expected to work as a team with FOH staff members, event coordinators and volunteers, supporting each other as much as possible in a fast-paced environment under the direction of the Bar Manager and/or Venue Coordinator.
Duties & Responsibilities
Engage with guests in a positive and friendly manner to build rapport
Provide comfort and hospitality to guests by welcoming them into the space, pointing out accessible washrooms, listening attentively for drink preferences and making recommendations
Serve drinks and take payments using point of sale system, terminals and cash
Balance cash out at the end of the shift
Have an understanding and knowledge of all products that are sold, including pricing and tasting profiles for beverages (ex: beer, wine)
Complete FOH opening and closing duties for every shift, which involves setup and takedown for tables and chairs
Assist with cleaning, bussing, bar support and general FOH duties on shift
Checking identification to ensure guests are of legal age (19+) for alcohol consumption
Adhere to health and safety guidelines and policies related to the VEC to ensure a respectful, clean and safe community space for everyone
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of local drafts, wines, spirits and cocktails
Positive attitude with the ability to communicate and work well as a team player
Skilled at providing excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment.
Skilled at handling money accurately and operating a point-of-sale system
Able to demonstrate flexibility and dependability by working varied hours and days to accommodate events
Ability to work in a loud setting, stand and walk for extended periods of time and lift or carry up to 25 lbs
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum of 1-2 years experience as a server, bartender or similar position
Experience with Square point-of-sales system or similar
Serving it Right certification
Fluency in English, both written and oral
How will you succeed as a server with us? You are the kind of person that can monitor a large room and take initiative to make sure our guests are taken care of. This means, you have a keen sense for anticipating the needs of guests as well as team members on shift. Smiling comes naturally, and you look forward to engaging with members of the community. At times, you may require strong emotional intelligence when confronted with social conflicts or unhappy patrons. If this is the case, you are able to remain positive and problem-solve with the help and support of your peers.
